We often see knobs under sinks or on large pipes and wonder what they are? They could be gate valves or stop valves. Both have similar functions but work differently, so let’s take a look at the differences.

Gate valves are easy to identify, they are usually taller and bulkier. The handle is usually round, and when you turn it, a flat part inside (called a gate) moves up and down. They are used in places where pipes are thick, such as basements or factories.

Stop valves are smaller and more compact, and the handle is sometimes lever-shaped or wheel-shaped. Stop valves are short and can be installed under sinks or behind toilets. There is usually an arrow on the side of the valve body to indicate the direction of water flow.

The working principle of a gate valve is similar to a sliding door. When you turn the handle, the gate slides up to open the pipe and is completely out of the way. This means that water or gas flows through with almost no thrust. When you close the gate, the gate slides down and tightly blocks the pipe. Gate valves are either fully open or fully closed.

A stop valve is more like a plug. It has a round disc inside that is attached to a handle. When you turn it, the disc moves down and blocks the pipe. It doesn’t take many turns to close like a gate valve, and you can close it quickly. Even when open, the disc is still part of the pipe, so the water has to go around it.

The application scenarios of gate valves are very wide. They are often used on main pipes that supply water to buildings. They can withstand pressure and will not reduce the speed of water flow. Factories use gate valves on large pipes that transport chemicals or steam. Fire hydrants use gate valves because they are almost always open and only closed for maintenance, and the gate valves are strong enough to withstand the high pressure when firefighters connect water hoses. Gate valves are also used in pipes with viscous or dirty bodies. The sliding movement of the gate can self-clean, thereby reducing the possibility of blockage.

Stop valves Stop valves are very suitable for small spaces and are often used in homes or small businesses. There will be a stop valve under the kitchen sink, behind the toilet, and behind the washing machine. They are installed in places where water needs to be cut off quickly, such as when the pipe leaks.

Choosing the right gate valve is not difficult.

For stop valves

Whether you choose a gate valve or a stop valve, choose a sturdy valve. If the valve body is lightweight and poorly made, it may not last long.
There is no absolute winner because the uses are different. A gate valve is like a heavy truck – good for hauling large loads, but not for squeezing into a tight parking space. A stop valve is like a small car – good for speeding around town, but not for hauling a large trailer.
